How Much Exercise to Lose Weight? What You Can Do to Effectively Lose Weight

"How much exercise to lose weight?" You ask. Believe it or not, it may actually be less than you think!

In this article I am going to talk about what I've been doing whilst on the Fit Yummy Mummy program. Before I started this program I thought that the more cardio I did, the more weight I would lose.

How wrong I was!

I'm going to talk now about what I do in the way of exercise to lose weight:

1. I do 15 minutes a day, 3 days a week of resistance training.

Resistance training involves using your body weight (or even free weights) to strengthen and build muscle. No, I'm not going to look big and bulky because women just aren't built for that, but men might go that way if they follow a good program!

The types of exercises I might do (this isn't an exhaustive list - you will need to check out the programs on my site if you want to know what you can do) are:

- Squats (different variations)
- Lunges ("normal" lunges and reverse lunges)
- Pushups
- Bench press and other exercises using dumbells
- Step ups
- Various core exercises

Of course I don't do all of these in one go. My routine only goes for 15 minutes, so I might do 6 exercises in that time with reps of 6-12 depending on the type of exercise (and how much it hurts!).

2. I do 15 minutes a day, 3 days a week of intervals.

Intervals are great! They're effective - even more effective than doing steady state cardio! So if you're thinking that 30 minutes to an hour on the treadmill is going to do you any good, think again! Try 15 minutes of intervals and you will see much better results! Also, you will have more time to do other things!

My intervals might work like this:

3 minute warm up (if I haven't done resistance training on that day).
30 seconds high intensity
1 minute low intensity

I sometimes jump rope for the high intensity then walk on the spot for low. You can also try running (or even sprinting) for high, then walking for low.

And that's all I do. That's a total of 90 minutes a week. I can do 30 minutes a day, 3 times a week, or 15 minutes a day, 6 times a week. As long as you do 15 minutes of each type of exercise, 3 times a week, then you will start to see results (in only 3 weeks I had lost weight and noticed some definition in my arms and legs - amazing!).

Is Having a Late-Night Snack Affecting My Weight?

If you are having an occasional late night snack then you are okay but if you consistently stay up late and eat late then you might need to change that habit if you are planning on losing weight. Eating late at nights is in itself is not necessarily bad for you but the chances that you might be eating unhealthy foods before you go to bed might not be your best plan.

Eating late is not only bad for your weight loss goal but it is also not good for your health. A recent study showed that people who are accustom to eating late at nights might develop heartburn. And because you might be going to be shortly after it makes it easier for your stomach acid to flow into your esophagus.

If you are eating late at night it might not be because you are hungry but simply because you are bored. If you notice this happening you might try to focus not on the huger but on some activities that will force you not to think of the hunger.

Most people do eat while watching TV. It just seem as if it has become a habit that once you sit in front of the TV you must be eating. It is not because you are hungry it has just become a habit so once you sit down, you must be snacking. The problem with this habit is that because you are not paying attention to the amount that you are eating, you usually eat more than you really need.
These days it has passed from the TV and has landed unto the computer. Most people once they sit in front of the computer, they just have to be snacking on something. If you notice that at nights you have to eat once you are at your computer, either try having healthy snacks or keep yourself engaged in an activity that does not let you think about food.

Eating large portions of calories and fat and going to bed is never good. All that extra food will just sit there and cause extra baggage that you do not want.

If some activities cause you to eat more than other, try doing them before it gets late thus breaking your habit of eating late. It is always best to go to bed on an empty stomach and get up the next day feeling energize. Do whatever is necessary to avoid a consistent eating at nights before going to bed.

These days there is way too much emphasis put on the way that we look.   • Remember that there are no miracle cures or shortcuts to a good, healthy lifestyle. The first thing you should do is spend more time walking. While 30 minutes of exercise is great for fat burning, when you walk, you really need to increase this up to 45 minutes, but preferably 60 minutes.

However, it might not be achievable for you to fit 60 minutes of walking into your busy schedule, but try walking every day walk a few days for an hour and a few days at half an hour. Rotate them, however. If you walk an hour on Monday, walk 30 minutes on Tuesday, etc.

If you can only spend 30 minutes on walking, you need to increase your speed. A leisurely walk is not going to provide you that aerobic workout that your body needs, so step it up a little. But do not go too far. If you cant talk and walk, you are over-exerting yourself and you need to back off a bit.

You can also carry some type of weight when you walk. This could be something simple like a small weight, or you can use a couple of cans of corn! Carry them in your hands as you walk and move your arms back and forth in your strides. If you add weight you will also help tone your arms.

If you are walking outdoors, take along a walkman and play some upbeat music to keep you walking. It is entertaining and it keeps you going as well.

How to lose body fat seems to be a question that many people make in their lifetime. The older you get, the easier it is to gain fat. It seems no one can avoid gaining weight when they get older. This will help to keep track of the energy that you consume. Analyzing this food and drink to understand how much energy you are consuming will help to know how much exercise and activity you need to implement.

Once you know your caloric intake, you'll then have to reduce some of the food that you eat. Use a table that shows the caloric value that your foods have. Most people interested in losing fat will probably reduce their diet by about 500 cal. You will have to find out what is best for you.
Then you need to grab another table to understand how much energy you need to expend weekly. I say weekly because when your exercise, you'll need to only exercise three or four times a week and not necessarily daily. Your muscles need to repair themselves. Therefore, look at a weeks worth to make it easier. However, you'll then have to break it down into each days worth.

Now, with this information you should have a good idea as to how much of an energy deficit you'll need to lose fat. As long as you have an energy deficit, you will gradually lose body fat. When you look at it, the process is rather simple.

One of the main problems people run into is being consistent. Consistency and being persistent will be the key to reaching your goal. Small steps are best. Losing weight fast could throw your body into a defensive mode so a few pounds a week will be good enough.

The answer to the question "how to lose body fat" really is not hard to understand. Staying motivated to continue the whole process likely will be the hardest. However, as long as you use more energy than you take in, you will be well on your way. Why You May Need to Exercise Less to Lose Weight!

A few years ago some studies were done to compare the effects of steady state cardio and intervals and the results were astounding!

What was astounding about the studies was that they found that those doing intervals lost more body fat overall than those doing steady state cardio.

In one study, one group did 40 minutes of steady state aerobics, three times a week for 15 weeks. The second group did 20 minutes (half the duration of the first group) of interval training, three times per week for 15 weeks.

During the 15 weeks, the first group GAINED 0.5kg of body fat! The second group lost an average of 2.5kg of body fat.

Other studies have had similar results, which means that many of us have probably been doing too much exercise!

A good example of intervals training is what I currently do. I do 15 minutes on the treadmill or elliptical. I go hard for 30 seconds, and slow my pace and intensity for 2 minutes. I keep repeating this process until the 15 minutes is up. Eventually I will work up for 2 minutes hard, then slow my pace for 2 minutes, until I have reached 15 minutes duration.

That's all I need - 15 minutes!

So other than the obvious weight loss advantages, what else is good about intervals?

1. It saves time. I only need 15 minutes to complete them!

2. It stimulates a greater release of growth hormone.

3. It's better for your joints.

4. It increases your metabolism and you will continue to burn fat for 24 hours after your interval session!

5. Creates variety - there are so many ways to do intervals, as follows:

Repeat these until you get to 15 minutes

- Burpees for 30 seconds then march on the spot for 2 minutes
- Run up the stairs, walk down
- Run up a hill, walk down
- Treadmill/elliptical trainer where you can vary your speed and intensity (30 seconds/2 minutes)
- Run with weights if you want to
- Much much more - be creative! Just as long as you're varying the intensity of your workout (as hard as you can for 30 seconds, then slower for 2 minutes, gradually building this up).

Of course if you've never done intervals before, it's worth seeing your doctor first, and once you get started on these (along with resistance strength training in your routine) you will begin to see some massive changes to your body!
