Fad Diets & Weight Loss

A diet may be a fad diet or a healthy diet. People often start a fad diet for fast weight loss. They do not realize that quick weight loss and a fad diet is not the answer for their weight problem. They may lose weight initially but that may not be permanent. The fad diets recommend to eat a certain group of foods and eliminate some foods or a group of foods from the diet. Such diets are not without a danger.

Some of the fad diets are:

Grapefruit Diet: This diet recommends to eat only grapefruit.

Low Carb Diet: This diet recommends to eat foods low in carbohydrates.

Low Fat Diet: This diet recommends to eat foods low in fats or eliminate fats in diet.

High Protein Diet: This diet recommends to eat only protein rich foods, eliminating carbohydrates

Note that these diets recommend to eliminate some food groups that are essential for a healthy body. These diets may offer only a temporary solution and are not based on the recommendationsof the food pyramid. On using a fad diet, you may lose weight fast, but lateron you may again gain weight and your body may be deficient in many nutrients that can develop health problems.

A good diet should provide all the major nutrients including dietary fibers, carbohydrates, proteins, good fats, minerals, and vitamins. The best way to tackle overweight and obesity problem is to eat a balanced diet and do some physical exercise daily.

You should not start any diet if it does not allow any major group of the food pyramid. The negative calorie diet is based on neagtive calorie foods that include vegetables, fruits, legumes, lentils, and beans, so it allows all the major nutrients in the diet necessary for good health. By eating these foods, you will never feel hungry and you will never gain weight. If you remain physically active and eat these foods, you will deop pounds permanently.

When is the Best Time to Workout? I'll Answer

What's the best time of the day to workout?

Very simply, the best time to workout is whatever time you can consistently fit into your schedule.

Ideally, you're not exercising in the morning one day, mid-afternoon the next, and maybe squeezing in an evening workout in a couple days.

It's best to get into a consistent pattern.
I generally encourage clients to try to fit exercise into their morning routine. I can tell you that morning exercisers are simply more successful at sticking with their program for the long term. Morning exercise becomes a lifestyle. Exercising before you head off to work allows you to start the day feeling great. You feel productive and ready to take on the challenges of the day.

You may say, "Doug, I'm not a morning person. I have to be at work at eight o'clock and there's no way that I'm getting up at 5:00 or 6:00 AM to exercise." Every once in a while I'll get this response. Fine. Then get your workout in later on. Maybe over the lunch hour or right after work. But I'll tell you that you will generally run into more issues that make it easy to miss workouts if you try to schedule it later in the day. When the day gets busy and push comes to shove, your evening exercise sessions will likely be disrupted.

Here are some facts that will help you pick the right exercise time for you:

Morning exercise allows you to maximize the benefits of something exercise physiologists call EPOC. EPOC stands for "excess post-exercise oxygen consumption". Research shows that exercise increases your resting metabolic rate to varying degrees. People seem to maximize this effect when exercising in the morning.

Lunchtime or afternoon exercise, if it can be squeezed in, will generally help you avoid the mid-afternoon energy dip which naturally plagues humans due to our circadian rhythms.

The only thing that I can think of that's really beneficial about evening exercise is the social implications. Generally evening exercisers are a more social crowd. Want to meet someone special in the gym, rather than a bar? Evening exercise will maximize your chances.

I should also mention that you probably do not want to workout too late at night. Late-evening exercise may interfere with your ability to sleep for several hours after the workout. Of course, if you feel that you need more energy in the evenings, exercising right after work may be a good option for you. Test it and see what works for you. Everyone is a little different in regards to how exercise affects their ability to sleep.

Weight Loss Surgery - Possible Complications and Risks

Any type of surgery comes with a certain degree of risk, and weight loss surgery (also known as bariatric surgery) is no different. But what are the potential complications of weight loss surgery, and how common are they? We will attempt to answer these questions here.

What is Weight Loss Surgery?
Before we talk about the possible complications of weight loss surgery, we need to define what this type of surgery entails, just so we are on the same page. Simply stated, bariatric surgery and weight loss surgery both refer to the same thing -- various types of surgery intended to help obese patients lose weight.

In her book The Patients Guide to Weight Loss Surgery, author April Hochstrasser defines bariatric surgery as "surgery on the stomach and/or intestines to help people lose weight by altering the normal digestive process."

Complications of Weight Loss Surgery
The complications associated with weight loss surgery vary, based on the type of surgery being performed. And, of course, the potential risks and complications of general surgery apply here as well.

Potential complications of general surgery:

  • Respiratory problems
  • Risk of infection (from incision area)
  • Excessive bleeding (internal or external)
  • Allergic reaction to medicines
  • Reactions to anesthesia

Potential complications of weight loss surgery:

  • Leaking of stomach acid or bacteria into the abdominal cavity
  • Vitamin and mineral deficiencies as a result of malabsorption
  • Hernia in the abdominal wall (with gastric bypass)
  • Dumping syndrome (heart palpitations, nausea, sweating, etc.)

The major risks of weight loss surgery:

  • Leaking of stomach content into other areas
  • Blood clots
  • Respiratory failure

According to the University of Iowa report "Mortality in Obesity Surgery," the majority of patients who die within a month of weight loss surgery suffer one of the three major complications above.

Are You Quitting A Weight Loss Regime Again?

Have you ever taken up a challenge with someone to show that you are able to lose weight, but failed miserably in the end?

If you happened to answer yes to either of the question, most probably losing weight isn't as important to you than how you thought it would.

You see, people always have the wrong mindset even if their intention to lose weight is good. Some people wants to look fabulous, some just want to show that they could. But good intention isn't the key to successful weight loss.

The key to successful weight loss is by admitting that it is a serious problem in your life, and that it may hinder your ability to lead a normal or better life ever again.

Some people think that the first step to lose weight, is to surfing the net and find some great workout and diet plan to follow.

To tell you the truth, those are the least important part of success weight loss.

In order to begin your regime at the right note, first you have to understand that weight problem is a very serious problem. And you have to tell yourself that you have the ability to correct this problem.

I don't care if you are a CEO of some big firm, or a ice-cream parlour girl. In both cases, the situation is equally problematic.

You must be saying :"Yeah, right. How can some one as high achieving as a CEO can have any grave problems?"

I tell you, problem is a state of mind.

If you are able to bring yourself to understand that losing weight is The problem, everything will come naturally.

When you are able to get through the stage of denial, you have cleared the first stage. Now I am sure you have cleared the second stage of self motivation, which is to read up on articles and maybe participate in special interest group discussions to verbalise your goals and mindset.

People often after a motivation talk or reading a motivation book, say that those information are just useless and are not effective to change your life. If you think it that way, then you have missed out step three. Step three by the way, is somewhat like coming out of self denial. Although self denial is about getting out of the gut, zealous living is about living your life with vigour and no regret.

Everytime if someone asked you how's your weight loss regime, instead of faking up a phantom workout session, you are able to list out step by step what you have accomplished for your goal. That is zealous living with no regret.

Maybe you don't ever need to visit another weight loss site ever again.

Improve Your Partner's Health and Fitness in 5 Steps

WARNING: This article is designed to be slightly 'tongue in cheek', but informative anyway...

Toy boys seem to be the latest 'hot accessory' for a whole host of Celebrity A-Listers in Hollywood right now. Demi Moore and Halle Berry seem to be leading the way in the 'toy boy' stakes, and many others are set to follow, but let's forget about tinseltown!

Who needs a toy boy when your current partner could be just as buff for their own age? I'm not talking six packs, bulging biceps and tree trunk thighs, but a lean, trim and stronger frame would surely hot things up in your current relationship, without a shadow of a doubt!

So, for those of you whose men have seen better days. And those of you men that think your partners might go looking for a younger model if you don't buck your ideas up, here are 5 good pointers on how to look 10 years younger (without going through that midlife crisis of wearing a biker jacket and highlighting your hair!)

1. Cut down on the booze.

Waistline results are almost guaranteed with a dip in alcohol intake. You might be able to get away with a heavy tipple when you're really 10 years younger, but let's be realistic here. You're not! Stop thinking you have to empty that wine bottle every evening with your dinner.

2. Drink enough water to float a boat.

Regain elasticity in your skin and lose that third chin by drinking enough water every day. Your breath won't stink, your energy levels will rise and you won't be caught taking afternoon naps, snoring the house down!

3. Avoid processed foods!

Sugar and white flour can cause reactions in the molecules of your skin, which can leave your skin thinner and weaker over time, leading to excess wrinkles and 'bagginess'. If you want your skin to be smooth as baby's bum, cut out the junk and start eating more sensibly...

4. Keep up your energy by staying active!

If you like the gym, stick with it. If you prefer the great outdoors, find an active hobby; triathlon, cycling, hiking, chopping down trees, fixing fences or chasing after the dog. Watching sport on telly doesn't count! It may look tiring but it won't do you any favours.

5. If you're thinning on top, do NOT go for a comb-over at the barbers!

42 percent of women say that bald is beautiful, so be a man and accept nature! Keep your hair closely cropped once your hair starts waving goodbye to your forehead...

Stick to those 5 rules and you'll look and feel a whole 10 years younger in no time at all. What these actions won't solve though are excess nasal hair, a fondness for cardigans and comfy shoes or a need to moan about everything in sight!

Turbulence Training Defined

Of course that means the user of the program will benefit from both technologies versus just one. It also provides a number of follow along examples for both woman and men alike. This allows trainers to have a model to follow if there clients so request.

There are a number of valuable benefits provided for education of users of the turbulence training website. Weight Loss For Life

You may have tried losing weight in the past, with poor or short-lived results. This can put even more stress on the body. What is needed is a healthy, and long-lasting approach. With this plan you will not be losing 10 or 20 pounds in a week or two, but rather a small and steady amount until you reach your target weight.

The steps outlined below are simple, but not always easy. Remind yourself of why you want to lose weight, and the ill effects obesity causes. Think of it this way: would you rather die from the effects of obesity, or would you rather lose some weight and enjoy more vibrant health?

1. Don't go on a diet.

There is no need to deprive yourself. Eat when you are hungry; just eat a better choice of foods in appropriate portions. Skipping meals or eliminating whole groups of foods is a sure way to set yourself up for failure. You want to keep the weight off.

Eat a healthy and hearty breakfast to start your day right. Study after study has shown the benefits of doing so. Have a bit of food from the main food groups, and you will be on the right track.

2. Eat more meals.

Yes, that's right - eating more meals throughout the day keeps you from getting overly hungry. In turn, this prevents overeating. Instead of eating three big meals, you would eat five or six smaller meals. Plus, eating this way will increase your metabolism, causing your calories to burn off faster.

3. About fat and sugar.

Low-fat and no-fat diets were very popular several years ago, but obesity rates still climbed. Eliminating fat from your diet does not work. However, choosing the right kinds of fat does work. Saturated and trans fats are the types to avoid. These are found in meat and other animal products, as well as coconut and palm oils. Avoid these in favor of unsaturated fats and Omega-3 oils. These are found in plant sources and fish.

Regardless of the type of fat, keep in mind that all fat is calorie dense (containing 9 calories per gram).

Naturally occurring sugars found in fruits and vegetables are a part of a healthy eating plan. They also have the benefit of satisfying cravings for something sweet. Refined sugar is a poor choice, and should be avoided where possible. In spite of claims to the contrary, this includes all types of refined sugar - including sucrose, brown, and turbinado sugar.

4. Get moving.

The word 'exercise' makes some people cringe. However, if you simply think of it as 'moving' it is much better. The key is to be active. You do not need a gym membership to get moving. (Though there is nothing wrong with joining a gym if would like to use the latest equipment or enjoy gyms)

Here is a quick example. Some people pride themselves on being able to find the parking space closest to the front of a store. Think about what would happen if they would take pride in how far they had to walk instead. Which leads right into one of the best ways to get moving - walking. Just about anybody can do it, and you don't need special equipment to get started (and you'll save a small fortune on gasoline in the process!)

When you think of your weight as something you do for life, it is much easier to make the changes needed. Following the steps above does not require major changes, but will have long-lasting results. You can start making these small changes right away. You have nothing to lose - except the extra weight you have been carrying around.

Weight Loss Surgery Precautions

Weight loss surgery can be the last resort for individuals with serious weight related health problems.

Weight loss surgery, also known as bariatric surgery, may be considered to improve your appearance as well as your health. The two most common forms of weight loss surgery are gastric bypass surgery (or stomach stapling) and lap-band surgery which uses an adjustable band to restrict food consumption.

If you are seriously considering weight loss surgery, you may have tried a number of weight loss diets and fitness plans and are convinced that the only way to lose weight is to resort to surgery. Firstly, you must understand that many weight loss surgeons will not even consider you for the procedure unless you are severely overweight or morbidly obese. This may be defined as an individual who is at least 80lbs overweight or whose weight is 50% -100% over their ideal weight.

This can also be worked out by using a Body Mass Index scale or BMI. The BMI takes your current weight and height and produces an index number which gives a good guide to how overweight you actually are.

Whether or not you are a candidate for weight loss surgery, it is sensible to look into alternative forms of weight loss first. Many people have had success losing weight through healthy eating, regular exercise and various weight loss products. These alternatives are often effective - and will save you a lot of money as surgery can be extremely expensive.

If you are looking for a quick fix or are considering weight loss surgery for purely cosmetic reasons, you should understand that even after you have had the surgical procedure your health care professional will still expect you to take regular exercise and stick to a rigid diet plan.

However, in cases where your health is at risk due to obesity then weight loss surgery can be an effective and viable solution to losing weight with long lasting results.

Remember to consult your doctor or health care professional on all matters, and do your research if you are seriously considering weight loss surgery and have exhausted your other options.

Weight Loss For Busy People

Busy people do not have time to concentrate on weight loss. It is a serious and understandable problem. Work schedules have not gotten lighter in the last decade. In fact people are working more. This leads to more eating on the run, drive thru dinners, and a lot of vending machine snacking.

The biggest problem with eating on the run is that the food choices are processed and put in a wrapper so its shelf life lasts for years. Their nutritional content wins the weight gain award. Fast food restaurants offer cheap food fast, which is handy when the work day is long, however, the offerings are high in calories and leave you hungry shortly thereafter.

Busy people also do not have the time to exercise adequately, so they are not only burdened by the fast food dilemma, they are accumulating unburned calories. It is a double edged sword that puts any kind of healthy decision making on the back burner.

Many work sites are now instituting wellness programs because healthy workers are more productive and cost less to the employer. Besides being a profit motive for companies, it can be a useful perk to employees who are given access to fitness rooms, on-site physician check ups, and even healthier food choices in the company cafeteria.

Whether or not your work place has a wellness program, your own interest in weight loss will empower you to look carefully at ways you can incorporate better habits that allow you to flourish in your career. The confidence you can gain by succeeding at a weight maintenance plan will carry over into other areas of your life, as well.

Busy people often do not want to think about their weight issue. This is to be expected. It is not a fun topic and procrastination is a natural reaction. That is why starting slowly is the first step. Allowing yourself time to ease into a weight loss plan will not overwhelm you.

The next step is to prioritize the areas of weakness, for example:
Eating out
Eating at work
Not cooking at home
Not anticipating schedule changes that temp you to skip meals

Choosing one or two of the less severe offenses and working on improving them are slow, baby step changes that can be made without being disruptive to daily activities.

Overeating unhealthy foods is the quickest way to put on the pounds. Busy people do not realize how much they actually eat. Another easy to implement practice is to eat only 80% of a meal or snack. Without having to measure food portions, just a simple visual approximation is all it takes. Especially with beverages, this can make quite a difference without feeling deprived.

Planning ahead for last minute events takes a little more work, but the payoff is great such as keeping a supply of healthy snacks in the car when a meeting location has changed or a child needs to be dropped off at band practice.

Taking short walk breaks is a simple activity to implement. Exercise can be spread out through the day. Two hours at the gym is not necessary to receive the benefits of exercise. Walking provides a good mental break and a way to curb cravings.

These suggestions do not have to be complicated. A few small changes create success so more successes can follow.

Expert Trainer Gives You 3 Ways to Lose More Fat

Once you get in the zone, burning fat can be very easy. I know, easier said than done, right? But maybe you just don't have the right tips and tricks in your arsenal to help you get started on the right foot.

So here are three of the most important things you need to be doing to get your fat burning workout program started properly.

1) Use Fitday to figure out your food intake.

You can't just "wing it". You can't "eyeball" your food intake, as research shows that even nutritionists underestimate how much food they are eating.

If you don't know whats going down your throat each day, you are going to eat way too much food and never burn the fat. If you aren't losing fat, it's a simple numbers game. You are eating too much. And if you know your numbers, its easy to make the necessary changes.

As one client said on the message boards...

"Ok, I input all my meals on Fitday yesterday, including 2 cheats that I didn't think were a big deal. One was a handful of trail mix and the other was a handful of goldfish crackers. (yes, I have kids :-) ) I can't believe how just those two seemingly harmless snacks added up!! No wonder I have a muffin top! Yikes! So thanks for the tip about Fitday because that's going to keep me accountable."

The little things add up so quickly! You'll be amazed when you finally start counting your calories that you will often be far above your recommended intake.

A little bit here and a little bit there is all that is needed to sabotage your efforts.

Use it and lose it!

2) Use the right recovery pace in your interval training

The biggest mistake people make in interval training is working too hard during the recovery period.

If you continue to work at a hard pace when you should be almost resting, you wont get the true benefits of interval training.

So lose the cardio mentality and be sure to alternate between periods of harder than normal exercise, and very easy exercise.

If you don't know about interval training, here is how it goes.

Start with your normal warmup. Let's say walking at 3.0mph on the treadmill. Do this for five minutes, and then increase the speed to 3.8mph (a fast walk). Do this for 30-60 seconds (as long as you are comfortable doing it - don't do it if you feel that is too fast for you).

Drop the intensity way back to three miles per hour.0mph for 60-90 seconds. That is one interval. Go back and forth between working hard and going easy for 3-6 rounds. Then finish with a 5-minute cool-down.

Use the recovery period to recover!

3) Plan your food intake on the weekend

Set aside time to plan, shop, and prepare several days worth of meals. Use a Saturday or Sunday afternoon to cook some chicken breasts, prepare some raw vegetables, wash your fruit, and pack up your nuts.

A little bit of knowledge can go a long way.

Its that easy.

Use interval training in your fat burning workout and bodyweight exercises to sculpt your body.

Recommended Weight Loss Diet

Losing weight is always easy. That is against the thinking of most people but it really is a simple equation; calories taken - calories burnt = weight loss. Most people suffer from this problem because of the life style they follow, which is really getting hectic day by day, so to control one's weight we need a weight loss diet. In this modern world every one wants to look smart and weight is one really important part of personality, so a weight loss diet is a must for those who are obese.

Most important is to know the reason of your obesity. If you are a young adult then probably you eat more than what is required unless there is some physical problem which a doctor would be able to handle better. But it would be less appropriate to keep harping on the point of weight loss without taking into consideration the importance of exercising. It is really important as it completely rejuvenates your mind and we all know a healthy mind has a healthy body.

As we all know dieting is not at all easy, more than physical exertion it requires great mental strength on the part of individual to diet and loose weight. Weight loss is easy if your diet is healthy, that is more of fruits and vegetables, and devoid of junk food. Control your urge for colas and such fizzes and prefer water instead. One golden tip is to choose fresh fruit instead of fruit juice. Further enhancing the cause of losing weight, you really don't get fat by eating but eating wrong food will make you fat; so correct diet is the secret to weight loss.

Exercising is really a must for a healthy body as it is a system which makes your body feel that it is still working and needs to be fit, it accelerates your metabolic rate thus making you burn more calories and hence helps you in weight loss. One important thing not to do in a diet is to starve yourself as it makes you irritated , it may make you loose weight for a small amount but it is sure that later on if strict diet is given up, weight gain will be at a rapid rate. Some of the breathing exercises also help you in losing by increasing the metabolic rate, so yoga is also one good option which can be considered. Rapid social changes in world make us meet different people so confidence is must and your fitness is one great impact area so choice is yours - fit or fat.

Weight Loss Supplements - Do They Really Work?

With two-thirds of Americans being overweight these days, the marketplace is filled with supplements that promise to help burn away the pounds. In fact, some go so far to say that they will do all the work for you. Reports of deaths related to these drugs, not to mention their heavy price tag, have led many to question just how reliable they really are.

A recent study by British researcher Max H. Pittler, MD, shows very little evidence of these supplements really assisting in weight loss. The reason that many of these weight loss supplements seem to work is known as the placebo effect. This simply means that by merely believing the supplement is helping them they will in fact lose weight. In Pittler's study, a dozen weight loss supplements were tested and of them only two, Ephedra and Chromium Picolinate, produced better results than a placebo. Ephedra however, has been banned by the FDA and should not be taken should you find a product that contains it.

Even if a few of these supplements do aid your weight loss, in the absence of exercise and better eating habits they are useless. Most of these products make unsubstantiated claims promising instant results with little or no effort by the consumer. They are legally permitted to make these claims because of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 which allows any product of plant origin to be sold freely.

The danger is that while these are mainly natural substances, in a condensed form they can cause many adverse affects such as high blood pressure, sedation, and fluid loss. Unfortunately, the FDA cannot do studies and deem them illegal until there have been cases of people getting ill or dying.

Besides the health risks associated with these supplements, there is the factor that these products are usually very expensive and can put a strain on a person's wallet which in these times of economic uncertainty can be just as hazardous.

If you are one of the many people who are battling a weight problem, make sure you are excising regularly and watching your calorie intake. The key to burning fat is simply burning more calories than you consume. Find the recommended calorie intake for someone your age and weight and do your best to stick with it. Food purchased from the grocery store will usually have its amount of calories somewhere on the container. It's extremely important to remember to avoid fast-food restaurants at all costs.

Start a daily exercising regimen and be faithful to it. Make sure you get in some exercise every day. You will find that doing a half-hour of exercise daily will show much greater results than exhausting yourself once a week. Remember to ask the advice of your physician before changing your diet or beginning a new exercise regimen. Your doctor may also be able to prescribe medication to aid you if he or she believes you can benefit from it.

Weight Loss Surgery: A Last Resort

Thinking about weight loss surgery? You're not alone. Over two-thirds of Americans are overweight or obese. Many are looking for ways to lower their bodyweight and enjoy a healthier, more active lifestyle. A fast surgical procedure seems like a great option. But, for the vast majority of people, weight loss surgery should be a last resort.

One of the most common types of weight loss surgery is liposuction, a procedure that removes excess fat from the waistline. Thousands of people - mostly women - undergo liposuction surgery every year. For many, it appears to be a much easier alternative to diet and exercise. Yet recent studies show that removing abdominal fat with liposuction provides almost none of the health benefits of "normal" weight loss: lowered levels of blood sugar, insulin and inflammation-related biomarkers, not to mention increased cardiovascular fitness, improved muscle tone, stronger bones, etc.

Another little-known problem with liposuction weight loss surgery: over 40% of patients regain the weight they lose from the procedure. Why? Simply because they make no healthy lifestyle changes. Some even believe that they can exercise less and eat more now that they have fewer abdominal fat cells. Obviously this isn't true and thousands of people find that out the hard way.

Other types of weight loss surgery are designed for the severely obese - generally those people with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher. These surgeries, which include gastric bypass and various "banding" and "stapling" procedures, have helped many formerly-obese people enjoy a higher-quality of life. However, all of these operations involve a considerable amount of risk.

Some of the risks associated with weight loss surgery include:

Death - According to the Mayo Clinic, about one in 200 to 300 people who has gastric bypass surgery dies from the procedure.

Post-surgery complications - Some weight loss surgery patients experience severe complications such as internal bleeding, infections, and blood clots. Others have to undergo follow-up procedures to correct complications such as abdominal hernias.

Gallstones - More than a third of patients develop gallstones as a result of losing large amounts of bodyweight following a weight loss surgery procedure.

Nutrient deficiencies - Some weight loss surgeries disrupt the digestion process. Without careful dietary supplementation this can lead to deficiencies in many important nutrients, especially vitamins B12 and D, iron, calcium, and folate.

Anyone considering weight loss surgery needs to weigh the risks against the benefits. They also need to realize that these extreme procedures are not cosmetic. Most patients only end up losing about 30% of their bodyweight and remain overweight for life. Simply put, weight loss surgery alone will not make you thin and beautiful. Yes, if you are extremely overweight, it may provide tremendous health benefits. But if you're just looking for a way to get thin without the "hassles" of healthy diet and regular exercise you better think again.

Target Heart Rate: Worthless?

Not long ago, before a severe heat wave struck our region, I got together with a few of my co-workers to play tennis one evening after work. I really love to play tennis even though Ive never progressed beyond the intermediate hacker level.

I do have a few brief flashes of what appears to be a game, but thats usually overshadowed by a host of botched shots, which I like to refer to as unforced errors.

The temperature was in the low 80s and the average age of my colleagues is around 30. At 49, Im the senior citizen in the group, but I felt I could hang with them.

Im not sure if it was the heat or being out of condition, but after about 20 minutes I had to excuse myself and take a breather. I really didnt feel very good and I didnt want to take any chances, but after a 5-minute rest I caught my second wind and played for another hour and a half.

I felt somewhat embarrassed because my co-workers know how fanatical I am about running off to the gym at lunchtime to workout. It also hit home that maybe Im not in very good cardio-vascular shape! It really made me rethink my training regimen.

My first thought was maybe all this emphasis on staying in the fat-burning heart rate zone was really just a false sense of complacency. Maybe what I really needed to be doing was getting my heart rate up much higher and working on improving my cardio conditioning. At least this would be the best way to improve my stamina on the tennis court.

The other harsh reality is that all this so-called fat burning training wasnt really burning very much fat!

Coincidentally, I recently came across an article that discussed a book entitled The Heart Rate Monitor Guidebook by Sally Edwards. She states, The 220 minus your age formula is worthless. She advises that you determine your maximum heart by using the Sub-Max Step Test.

This simple test is performed by stepping up and down on an 8-inch step for 3 minutes without pausing and then taking your heart rate during the third minute. I just did this test today at the gym. I used one of those step aerobic platforms, which works great by the way.

Once you have your heart rate, she then advises that you add an estimate factor to it based on your fitness level:

Poor shape = 55
Average shape = 65
Excellent shape = 75

You then take 70% 80% of this number to get your fat-burning target heart rate.

My results from the step test were:

144 bpm at the end of 3 minutes
144 + 65 (assume average shape) = 209 bpm
.70 * 209 = 146 bpm (target fat-burning heart rate)

80% would be 167 bpm, which quite frankly I think would kill me. She advises not to go over 90%. Dont worry Sally, theres no chance of that happening!

Please be very careful when performing this test as well as calculating your sub-max heart rate. As you can see, this number will most likely be substantially higher than the old method:

200 49 = 171 bpm
.70 * 171 = 120 bpm

What it looks like to me is that this sub-max method actually puts your fat-burning heart rate closer to your cardio-conditioning heart rate derived with the old method. This seems to make sense. Highly conditioned athletes in sports such as basketball usually arent carry around a lot of body fat!

So if you feel that your training and conditioning are at an intermediate to advanced level, you may want to take up the intensity of your workouts and see if the fat starts to melt away -- like I do on a hot summer evening while playing tennis!

Weight Loss Surgery 101 - Restrictive vs Malabsorptive Surgery

All forms of bariatric surgery can be classified as either malabsorptive, restrictive, or a combination of the two. It's important to understand these terms, because they will have an impact on your lifestyle and long-term health after your weight loss surgery.

Malabsorptive weight loss surgery
Malabsorptive can be literally translated as "relating to bad absorption." This type of surgical procedure alters your digestion process. As a result, it can lead to the incomplete absorption of certain vitamins and minerals from your food. This is why many Dallas bariatric surgeons will recommend vitamin supplementation afterward. Gastric bypass surgeries fall into this category.

Restrictive weight loss surgery
This type of procedure decreases food consumption by reducing the size of the stomach, which eventually leads to weight loss as well. This is achieved by dividing the stomach into a small upper pouch and a larger lower portion. Gastric banding procedures such as the LAP-BAND fall into this category.

Combination surgery
Certain types of surgery for weight loss (such as the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass) are both restrictive and malabsorptive. The Roux-en-Y segments the stomach while also reshaping the intestines, thus it combines both concepts into one surgery.

What to Take Away
The important thing to remember here is that malabsorptive and restrictive surgeries both have their advantages and disadvantages, and that they will affect your long-term health in different ways. When considering surgery for weight loss, be sure to consider these two concepts and the effects associated with them.

Also, keep in mind that a surgeon or surgery center that specializes in a certain type of weight loss surgery will often tout that type of procedure as being the best. Clearly, these folks are biased on the subject. So in your research, be sure to include less biased sources of information, such as governmental studies, university research and the like.

3 Weight Loss Motivation Tips You Have To Know About To Succeed

Maintaining your motivation to lose weight through a diet process is an extremely important thing. It'll make it easier to stick to the diet for a long time and will help you to make the most of it. However, diet motivation is a hard thing to maintain since a diet is a time when you do restrict yourself somewhat on what you can eat and the way you lead your life. So how can you do this? This article will provide some tips for just that.

3 Weight Loss Motivation Tips

1. Enlist the support of your loved ones - Your environment greatly affects your motivation to lose weight. For this you need to support of your friends and family. After all, it'll be pretty hard to stick to a diet if your family eats candy and fried food at the same table where you eat. Believe me, if you state your goals to your family, they'll be willing to help you. Even your children will be glad to pitch in. They'll serve as a force which will help you find motivation to lose weight and to maintain it.

2. Don't compare yourself to other people - There will always be someone who loses weight faster and easier than you. But what difference does it make? You should concentrate on yourself alone. If you succeed in losing weight, that's the main thing. Even if your weight loss rate is slower than some people's, as long as you're losing weight, you're doing great. Keep up your weight loss motivation. You deserve it.

3. Paint a picture of your future - You started this weight loss process for a certain goal: you want to look better, be healthier, and feel better. I want you to create a mental image of how your life will be like when you have attained those goals. This will serve as a beacon for you whenever you feel slightly down during the diet and will help you maintain your weight loss motivation. If you keep your goals in front of you, you will have something that's worth dieting for. As you approach your goal, it'll be even easier to stick to your diet and make it work better for you.

I hope these 3 weight loss motivational tips will help you to lose weight and keep it off forever.

The Naked Truth About Weight Loss Systems

How many weight loss systems have you heard about? How many of them have you read about in magazines, the Internet, newspapers, etc...How many of them have you tried?

After the big holidays of the year, especially after the huge amount of calories, fat, and "not very healthy" substances we have been enjoying and eating almost non stop during those special celebrations of the year, such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, but also after birthday parties, wedding celebrations, etc.

There is a moment when all of us take a look at our body and decide to do something "drastic" in order to get rid of the excess weight we have accumulated in those moments we share with family, friends and people we care about and socialize with. These are also the moments when our calorie intake is totally out of control, and we don't realize, or we just don't care about how much we are eating and how long it will take to eliminate that extra weight we accumulate with or without taking account of.

There are a few key factors we should focus whenever we decide to start a diet. If you follow these simple but absolutely essential points I will discuss below, you can be sure the next time you decide to get rid of your extra "baggage", you efforts will be satisfied with a total success:

  1. Research: There must be dozens of thousands of systems out there promising instant miracles. In my opinion the best thing you can do for yourself is to read, research, investigate before you decide what is the program that best fits your needs.
  2. Do not believe in miracles: Miracle diets simply do not work. Anything that promises instant results should not be considered.
  3. Be patient: Take your time, and when you decide to start your program do it without any hurry. You should face the weight loss program without any commitment ahead, such as a wedding to attend, summertime is almost here, I am getting married in 2 months, etc... you know what I am talking about.
  4. Be constant. If you start a system and you fail, do not worry at all. Relax, read your system carefully one more time, and start it again from scratch, with enough self-confidence, knowing that you have all the time you need in front of you.
  5. Be positive: You have to be positive, optimistic, and happy about your decision. You have already taken a very important step just by following the 4 previous steps, so the most difficult part has already been accomplished. Tell to yourself that you can do it, and face each day as your goal. Every night, before you go to bed, just review mentally your daily routines, and tell yourself you are in the right path to achieve your goals.

Fat Loss 4 Idiots - Avoid the Scam!

By now, you must have heard about the latest online diet called Fat Loss 4 Idiots. It's a very popular way to loose weight because you don't have to go to meetings, eat diet foods or take pills. Plus you can follow this guaranteed weight loss program right in the comfort and privacy of your home. The only person that will ever know that you're on a diet is you! And for some people, that can make or break their weight loss success.

I signed up for Fat loss 4 Idiots last year. I did loose 8 pounds in 11 days, but after that, I dropped the ball and couldn't make the commitment to keep on going. As part of my New Years Resolutions, I have started the diet again, and I fully expect to achieve the same results and more. I have promised to follow the 11 day plan over and over again until I hit my target weight.

So, the question is, is Fat Loss 4 Idiots a Scam? In my experience with the diet, the answer is definitely not! However, I have seen lots of buzz lately around the Internet with people attempting to share their menus from the Diet Generator with others who are not members. Of course this is obviously not fair to those of us that have paid to become members, but more importantly you are doing more damage than good to the person receiving the information. And Here are two Crucial Reasons Why...

First, The Fat Loss 4 Idiots way of eating is very personalized. It is totally tailor made to the individual. When someone signs up and initializes the Diet Generator for the first time They get to pick their favorite foods. This alone is essential for winning the dieting game. If a member gives their personalized 11 day Menu to someone else, then he or she might not like the foods that are on it. The probability of them sticking to the plan or enjoying the diet then becomes slim to none.

Second, don't let the user friendly Diet Generator fool you. It is a very sophisticated piece of software. If you have gone more than 1 round with the Fat Loss 4 Idiots Diet, then you will have noticed that even if you pick the same foods, your 11 day menu combinations are totally different. That is because the Fat Loss 4 Idiots Online Diet Generator uses food to stimulate the right hormones in your body to produce optimum weight loss. Therefore, the software must keep track of what combinations members have already eaten to assure the guaranteed results. That's why a New 11 Day Menu is generated every time.

The customer only pays once to sign up for the diet, but they can use the Online Generator as many times as they wish, until the weight loss goals are met. Do you see how someone could get sabotaged during their dieting plight if they were given the wrong information, the wrong combination of foods and the wrong sequence of meals? Members that do this are also jeopardizing the integrity of this incredible diet.

In the end, the Idiots Diet most definitely works, but the possibility of a Fat Loss 4 Idiots Scam does exist, so make sure that the information you get is directly from the website or customer service.

Find why diets don't work Fat Loss 4 Idiots Really Works Forget the Hype, you will get the truth here.

New Year Resolution - Weight Loss

Losing weight is a goal that will probably be all the more popular as the years go by. As the obesity epidemic grows, people will be all the more intent on making New Year's resolutions that involve some idea of weight loss. But just how should someone lose weight? Can the idea of weight loss be made into a workable New Year's resolution at all?

First of all, the idea of losing weight is very general, and it will be difficult to meet if you have no idea of how you want to lose weight, and how much weight you want to lose. You might also need to have an idea of how fast you want to lose that weight. Remember, weight loss is not as simple an idea as it's often worked out to be. Losing weight involves your entire body participating in the weight loss process: your muscle mass will change, the percent of fat in your body will change, and even your endocrine system, the group of organs in your body that is responsible for producing your hormones, will have to adjust to your new weight, exercise, and eating habits.

When making the resolution, think: how much weight do you want to lose, and how fast do you want to lose it? Do you want to lose weight in your overall body, or are there places in your body that have a lot of flab and are especially prone to weight gain? How much weight do you want to lose in a few months? All these questions need to be answered when you start formulating your fitness goals. These can determine what kind of weight loss regimen you need to follow - and moreover, you will need this information in order to tell your prospective trainer or nutritionist exactly what he or she will need to do in order to help you meet your weight loss goals.

You will need to consider different ways to meet your weight loss goals. There is the all-important exercise. You can choose to make your own regimen or to go to the gym. The advantage of having your own regimen is that you have more control over the intensity of your exercise, and you do not have to spend a lot on a gym membership. One disadvantage is that you may not have the time to carry out the regimen, and sometimes, depending on your fitness needs, it can be expensive if you have to spend on more expensive gym equipment.

The advantage of going to the gym is that you are forced to go because of the often exorbitant gym fees that you will need to pay. Some gyms also offer fitness training, weight training, consultation with a nutritionist, and free use of gym facilities, such as the showers and the sauna. However, you might not feel like going to the gym all the time. This might cause you to spend a lot of money for very little done on your part.

There are also many different exercises you can do, depending on your weight loss needs and your health background. There are the high impact exercises, such as boxing, aerobics, street dancing, and other exercise routines that demand a lot of stretching and twisting from you. This can be dangerous for you if you have bone or muscle problems. There are the low impact exercises, such as yoga or Pilates, which involve very gentle movements that aim to relax you. Such exercise will allow you to have greater control over your breathing, and greater flexibility over certain muscle groups. In particular, Pilates strengthens your body core.

There are also many different fun activities that have been turned into exercises. These include belly dancing, which can be good if you want to lose weight around your abdominal area. You can also do line dancing, jazz, ballet, and other forms of dance in order to strengthen different parts of your body and get yourself into shape.

These are only a few aspects of weight loss that you may need to take into account before you make your weight loss resolution. Remember, weight loss is not a simple idea, and there is no single technique that you can follow. You can use a combination of all these exercises, or even add it to a special diet. In any case, always consult with an expert before you do anything drastic. Your body will love you for it.
