Certain chemicals in the brain are linked to both mood and hunger.

For example, one of the most likely culprits that lurks behind the act of emotional binges is cortisol -- a stress hormone that tends to make people crave sweet and salty food. So, if you experience more stress than is natural, higher quantities of cortisol is produced, leading you to crave for unhealthy foods, and this in turn leads to other health related problems. It's the domino effect.

In cases like these it is wise to resolve your emotional issues first, even if you need to consult a specialist, rather than trying to attack the eating problem first.

And for your own good, try to cope in healthy ways --

  • Exercising has the effect of letting the dominoes and the dice fall in your favor. It is the foundation of feeling good and eating healthy. Get your endorphins going, instead of cortisol.
  • Eliminate any temptations by not actually buying foods that are going to cause you a problem. This will encourage you to eat better foods and in doing so change your behavior patterns.
  • Social support can go a long way toward helping you process your feelings. Put your trust in your family, a close friend, or once again - by seeing a specialist if necessary.
  • Keep a diary. This has proven time and time again to have many health benefits beyond mere stress management. This is successfully used to set goals, keep track of daily consumption and to chart progress. Even when failures arise, these are noted, and used constructively, eventually just becoming a bad day between more and more successes. Don't Let an Injury Set You Back: Use Cross Transference

Injuries upset competitive athletes because they know their competitors are still training. They can maintain fitness by using a training technique called cross transference, and so can you. Exercising one leg or arm helps to maintain strength, endurance and power in the other limb. The muscles in the injured limb are not strengthened directly because they are not being used. Cross transference strengthens nerves in both limbs, even though only one is being exercised (Journal of Applied Physiology, November 2005). Each muscle is made of millions of fibers, and each fiber is stimulated by a single nerve.

When you exercise, your brain sends messages along these nerves, telling only about five percent of the nerves to contract at the same time. With training, your brain learns to contract a greater percentage of muscle fibers simultaneously. The more you practice a specific exercise, the greater percentage of your muscle fibers you can contract at the same time. When you stop exercising, your brain quickly loses its ability to contract as many fibers at the same time and you lose strength, endurance and coordination. However, if you continue to exercise one arm, your brain retains its ability to contract the fibers in the opposite arm. This concept applies only to opposite limbs; you can maintain strength in an injured arm by continuing to exercise the uninjured one, but exercising your legs will not strengthen your arms and vice versa. So if you are a runner who injures a leg muscle, you can work the uninjured leg on resistance machines to keep up the strength of both legs. If you are a baseball pitcher, you can help to maintain strength in an injured arm by using your other arm to throw and do resistance exercises.

  • 2) Deadlift - The deadlift should be a staple of your routines. If it's not, you're truly missing out. This will build a lower back of steel and hits the abs in a very efficient manner as well.
  • 3) Front Squat - Instead of doing a squat with the bar on your traps, try putting the bar on the front of your shoulders with your arms crossed and holding the bar. This absolutely kills your core, and is well worth the pain.
  • 4) Sandbag Pickup - This has recently become a favorite of mine. People may comment that it will hurt your lower back, but all you have to do is simply not round it out as you're bringing it up. Heave the bag from the floor to your right shoulder, then do the same to your left shoulder.
  • 5) Plank - Ahh yes, the plank. What an old time favorite exercise. Although this is more for endurance, it's still a tremendous exercise that everyone should be able to do for at least 2-3 minutes if they want to be considered as having a strong core. This is probably the best core exercise for a mix of strength and endurance.

There are many exercises people would consider the best core exercises, but these are simply my opinion of the top 5. Everybody responds differently of course, but I think it's safe to say that you'll do fabulous if you incorporate these top 5 best core exercises into your program.
