Why Cardio Will Not Help You Lose Weight and Could Make You Gain!

Are you trying real hard to lose weight? Giving it your best shot? Following all the rules? Then I bet you do plenty of good quality cardio exercise, don't you? If you're really committed, you might even put in an hour each day! Gotta burn up those calories. Gotta stay in the fat-burning zone.

But what if ....

I mean, what if it's all just make-believe?

What if it's nothing but a myth ...

That cardio is the best exercise for weight loss, that is. Could that be possible? Sounds kinda crazy, doesn't it? I mean, 'they' have been telling us for years that cardio burns fat.

So why is it then that the people I've watched day after day, after week, after month, after year on the treadmills do nothing but gain weight? Why is it that so many people who walk every day, or even perform higher intensity cardio every day, just can't seem to slim down? And why is that when I dramatically slashed the amount of cardio performed by myself and my clients, the weight came off with far greater ease?

Because the cardio myth just ain't true, that's why.

Here's what the latest research and clinical evidence is telling us about exercise for fat loss:

- While cardio exercise can assist you to lose weight in the short-term (coming from a background of little or no activity), these effects soon taper off

- This is because cardio exercise is repetitive by nature, and your body is conditioned to adapt quickly to repetitive movement. After all, why waste energy (that means burn fat) on something that requires a relatively low level of functional movement? And no, it doesn't matter that cardio puts you in the 'fat-burning zone!' It's all about what your body does after the event ...

- As a result, the only way to continue the fat loss response from cardio exercise is to perform greater and greater amounts of the stuff

- Not only is this not practical, it actually backfires on you in the end anyway

- You see, regular bouts of repetitive cardio actually elicit a fat-storing response in your hormonal system. This is because evolution has programmed your body to store fat in times of crisis - and long-duration cardio is viewed as just that. In nature, you'd only be on the move for a period of time if you had a threat to your survival: to your food source, your safety, or your shelter. So it would be important to store fat faster.

Does that make sense? I'm thinking that no matter how much of a cardio queen - or king - you are (hey, I've been there, I know it's hard to give up on), you've still got to admit there's something to what I'm saying.

So WHAT should you do instead?

--- Perform functional movements like squatting, lunging, bending, pulling, pushing, or twisting

--- Okay, so if I'm totally technical about it, it's not 100% true that cardio exercise is no good for weight loss. Some approaches to cardio can be a useful addition to your weights or functional training. The side salad to the meat and veg, so to speak. But I'm not talking about standard cardio training. Have you heard of interval training? This is a great method for fitness and fat loss, when combined with an effective weights or functional movement pattern. An example of interval training would be to set aside no more than 20 minutes wherein you run one minute as fast as you can, then walk or jog a minute to recover.

--- Use all your free time (from not having to do so much cardio) to research what YOUR body really needs.

If you need to lose weight, more than likely you are thinking in terms of diet and exercise plans, not pets. There are, however, several reasons why getting a dog may be the best thing you ever do, in terms of weight loss. Having a dog can lead to several small but significant lifestyle changes that all add up, over time!

For one thing, a dog requires a minimum of one hour a day of walking and thats every day, not just sunny days, and not just when you feel like it. Of course, you can just take the dog into the yard and throw the ball for it, but why not take advantage of your canine companion and go for real walks every day? Its better for you, and better for the dog. Over time, it gets to be very enjoyable.

Some people feel that just the act of getting a new puppy is weight loss measure in and of itself. Until its trained, its more than likely to keep you on your toes youll be lucky to get a chance to sit down and eat, let alone cook! That initial crazy period usually ends pretty quickly, though. Besides walking, here are some other tips for easy weight loss with dogs.

Heres a great trick feed any bits of food you dont want or think you shouldnt eat to the dog. For example, I havent eaten a toast crust in over two years. I used to eat them just to be rid of them. It just seems wrong to throw them in the garbage, somehow. But feeding them to the dog is nothing more or less than symbiotic. You may not think this is a great weight loss measure, by the way, but Im sure that all those crusts add up!

I must admit (and veterinary dog food purists, close your ears!) that it goes a bit further than that. What if you have made a yummy pasta dish, and theres just a little left, not really enough to be worth putting in a plastic container and saving? If its not so good, Id throw it out, but if it is good, that puts me in a spot. Ill probably either eat it outright despite being full, or pick away at it over the course of a few hours until its gone. This can be avoided if you just simply and automatically give it to the dog. After all, dogs evolved alongside humans for millennia in exactly this way. They ate the leftovers of whatever their human companions were eating. Nowadays, the pet food industry cautions us against doing so, but if the food youre eating is reasonably healthy, whos to say that feeding small bits of it to the dog will do the dog any harm at all?

Personally, I have, on occasion, sunk even lower than that in canine gastrointestinal abuse. There is a brand of white cheddar popcorn, marketed as Smartfood and sold in huge bags, with about a day and a half worth of calories in each. I love it. I love it so much I have been known to eat a whole bag over the course of a few hours. Its delicious. Its the kind of thing I should never buy a bag of. But if I do, and Ive ripped into it, and its disappearing, I can do damage control by periodically pausing in my binging to tip large amounts of the popcorn into a bowl on the floor, where it is just as quickly eaten up by the dog.

It helps to have a big dog. I dont know that any of these measures would work so well with a little one that cant eat quickly. It helps, also, if the dog is at least half black lab. They are purported to have iron cast stomachs, rather like goats, and this has proven to be true in the case of my dog as proven when, at the age of eleven months, she ate four tubes of oil paint, metal and all. She ate all the reds, yellows and oranges, strangely enough ignoring the cool side of the color wheel completely and, amazingly, suffered no ill consequences at all!

How To Lose 40 Pounds in a Month

Just a few days ago someone asked me if it's possible to lose 40 pounds in a month, and if so how she could do it. I decided to take the answer I gave her and to make an article of it. So here it is.

But before I write about how this can be done, let me say that I suggest you give yourself more time to lose 40 lbs. A month will require some drastic measures. But if you're adamant about it, read on. You need to be aware that in order to lose 40 pounds in 30 days, you need to create a massive calorie deficit. This isn't something which is easily done. It's possible to do this in just 2 ways:

1. Use a detox diet - A detox diet cleanses your body of a great deal of undigested pounds and helps you to create a calorie deficit. A detox diet includes drinking a lot of fluids, usually water and fruit juice (fresh juice). This kind of diet flushes you out and helps to stave off hunger. In this way it's possible to lose 40 pounds fast. In a month, it can be done. However, you need to be aware that this may not be the healthiest thing to do. Using a detox diet for too long can be detrimental to the body since you're not eating a lot of necessary nutrients. It's great for fast weight loss, but don't use it for too long.

2. The second way to lose 40 lbs in a month is to create the necessary calorie deficit by working out a lot and eating in moderation. You will need to do a lot of cardio (at least 4 hours each week) and also do strength workouts, but cardio is key. You will not be building muscle tissue in this month, you will only be losing weight. If you do enough cardiovascular workouts, and eat in moderation (a lot of vegetables and fruit and short on carbs), you may be able to lose 40 pounds in 1 month. But you need to be aware that this will require a massive effort on your part.

As I said, it's possible to lose 40 pounds in a month with the right kind of determination and willpower, but I suggest you give yourself a bit more time. It'll make it easier.

Lose The Weight, Not The Fun, Of Summer Cookouts

It's summertime!

And with it comes barbecues, picnics, celebrations, and FOOD TEMPTATIONS. If you are trying to lose weight, control your blood sugar, cut back on saturated fats for heart health, or make any other dietary changes to improve your well-being, this can spell failure or the idea of deprivation. So what is a person to do? Shut themselves inside and become a recluse? Well, that IS an option, but not one that would probably make you very happy!

Commit to doing things differently from now on. Parties, cookouts, and social events are going to be a part of the rest of your life. It is time to leave the "kid in a candy store" mentality behind. You can still enjoy parties without making your body pay the price.

Below are some tips for handling picnics/cookouts, parties, and other celebrations with greater ease (for your mind and body).

* The number one thing to do is go with a plan in mind. Stop pretending you do not know what your M. O. (pattern) is at such events. You have had that "V-8 moment" after overindulging at a party far too many times to fool yourself anymore. Think ahead and decide what your strategy is going to be as far as eating (and even drinking). Then, stick to it! You may not do everything you planned to at first, but do not let that be an excuse for giving up. Keep reviewing your attempts and challenges, and resolve to do a little better each time based on what you learned the previous time.

* Never go to a social event hungry, unless you are planning to have a MEAL there. You are just setting yourself up to overeat or eat junky food. The "saving-calories-for-later" strategy does not work well for SO many reasons. Eat before you go if you know there is going to be a lot of finger food. Have a balanced, healthy meal at home and maybe just plan to have a small dessert there.

* Do not eat anything unless it is on a plate and served all at once (that includes you fixing the plate). Picking at food here and there makes it difficult for you to process how much you have eaten. By the time your stomach feels the stretch and sends the signal to the brain to turn off the appetite, you have already overeaten.

* Drink water or Perrier (NOT soda water or flavored water) instead of alcohol, or at least have 1 or 2 glasses of water between alcoholic drinks. This will help counteract the dehydrating effects of alcohol, reduce unnecessary calories/sugar, and prevent you from becoming inebriated!

* Bring your own healthy dish to share-something you have discovered and thoroughly enjoy. This assures that you will have at least one thing you can eat there that will not sabotage your healthy eating efforts, and makes you look like a thoughtful guest (momma always told me to never be an empty-handed guest). You might even find people asking you for the recipe!

* Barbecues are often an overload of starches: bread/rolls/buns, potato salad, pasta salad, potato chips, baked beans, etc. Piling your plate with high-glycemic, low-nutrition carbs such as these can sabotage your best efforts at life-time weight loss unless you learn to be smart about them. Either choose to have only one of them, along with a meat and some greens, or a smaller serving of a few of them.

* Learn to dodge or deflect people's well-intentioned urges for you to eat. If someone asks you if you tried "such & such" yet, you can say "Yes, and it was great" or "No, I'm full right now" or try, "Oh, I can't eat that; it gives me gas" (if you are the type of person who is comfortable delivering a line like that). People will continue to offer you food (sometimes even being insistent about it, which is usually based on their own insecurities), but continue to hold your ground and repeat the same phrase again. (If you have a particularly hard time with this, I suggest you practice some phrases in the mirror until you get comfortable saying them and they will more easily roll off the tongue when you need them. Seriously; try it).

* Focus on the fun, not the food. Unless the invitation said, "Come to a food-tasting party," there is some other reason for the event. Keep your focus on that. Use your mouth for talking more than eating. Keep your hands occupied with a bottle or glass of water. Involve yourself in any activities available.

Losing weight is something that we all worry about, as a society. In fact, studies show that North Americans are heavier than they have ever been before, and this includes our children. With all the health problems that are caused by obesity, thats a very serious problem it will probably impact on our health care costs in the very near future.

At the same time, the desire to be thin and fit has never been stronger. Advertising and images in the media tell us that a thin body is the only acceptable body and this is particularly true for women and girls. Putting all these facts together, what we have is a situation in which more and more people are very unhappy about their weight.

To discover the easiest ways to lose weight, we should consider why North Americans are overweight today, and how this is different from the behavior of most other societies. Theres a popular book on the market right now about why French women dont gain weight, despite a diet that is rich in meat and dairy fat. Whats their secret? And why are most Europeans and Asians naturally thinner and fitter than North Americans?

The answer is simple. There are two reasons: First, the food that people eat in most traditional societies is of better quality than the instant or packaged food that we tend to eat. This is changing in another generation or so, people all around the world might end up with the same weight problems that Americans already have. But theres a lot to be gained by eating food thats prepared in a traditional way, and that is as close to its natural form as possible.

The other reason is that people in more traditional societies are more physically active. This may surprise you, given the obsession with exercise that many North Americans have. But its true because of amount of time that we spend sitting in our cars, we simply dont get as much exercise as we should. Exercising vigorously two or three times a week is still not as effective as the constant exercise that you get if walking or biking is your regular means of transportation.

So, in short, these are the easiest ways to lose weight over time: First, eat foods that are in their natural state, or as close to it as possible. And second, use your car as little as you can. Some people make it a rule not to drive if they are traveling less than ten or fifteen blocks, for example.

These arent the quickest ways to lose weight, but they are the easiest and the best. Thats because, unlike a diet, these are lifestyle change that will make you healthier. Once you start enjoying regular exercise and good food, chances are that youll never want to go back. So unlike diets, which might offer more impressive results in the short term, you are unlikely to gain back the weight that you lose in this manner.

Heres how to get started:

First, when you go the supermarket, try to avoid the center aisles. In most markets, the meat, milk, eggs, fruits and vegetables are located at either end of the store, and in the back. The center aisles, on the other hand, are where all the packaged food is kept. If you avoid the middle of the store as much as you can, you will end up with a cart full of natural protein and produce, the perfect ingredients for losing weight.

Heres another hint: dont let yourself get hungry. Eat regular meals, so that you dont feel deprived. If youre like most of us, once you feel hungry you are more likely to eat whatever happens to be available, healthy or not. Thats where the problems start. If you have regular, healthy meals and snacks, you wont be tempted by the junk food thats all too readily found in any corner store or vending machine.

Finally, avoid using your car as much as you can. Its better for the environment, and much better for you. Walking for a few hours every day is actually a better way of losing weight than if you exercise vigorously a couple of times a week. Try to work walking into your daily routine for example, can you leave home a half hour earlier and walk to work each day? With gas prices reaching an all-time high, think of all the money youll save while youre using weight!

Follow these simple life changes for lifelong health and fitness. Over time, your body will settle at a healthy weight, and you can begin to enjoy the ample benefits that this brings!

The key is that you like it. If you hate it, you will not do it. Once you find an activity that you like to do try and do it for 20 to 30 minutes everyday or every other day. For those that find it really hard to exercise, walking may be perfect for you. A 20-minute walk everyday will do wonders for your metabolism and overall health.

Be a Stair Climber

If you live in a two-story house, you have one of the best pieces of exercise equipment. Or, maybe your work is in a multi-story building. Yes, I'm talking about stairs. Walking up and down a flight of stairs for 20 minutes will burn calories and get your heart rate up. It's easy and it's free.

It may be a little boring, but there are ways around this. If you are at home, place a TV at the top of the stairs, or just turn on the TV closest to the stairs. Watch your favorite show or a DVD. The time will fly.

Not All Habits Are Bad

If there is any secret to losing weight quickly, it is that you are fat because of your eating and lifestyle habits. The way you eat and the way you live is the reason you are fat. So what's the secret? Are you ready? Here it comes: change the 'way' you eat and 'way' you live in a way that it maintains a healthy and sexy bodyweight. I'm sorry but it does not get any simpler than that.

If you want to see the power of this truth first hand, then just keep a journal for two weeks on what you eat and how much exercise you get. Write down everything you eat and the time of day that you eat it. Write down every kind of exercise you get and when you do it.

It will not take long for you to become real clear about why you are overweight. It will also become clear what you need to do to lose weight and keep it off. However, the 'secret' is that the changes you make need to be permanent. If you do not consider the changes you will make to lose weigh permanent, then you will just put the weight back on when you return to your old eating and behaviors. You must change your habits if you want achieve long term weight loss.

A lot of people are unhappy with their current body weight. Some people just want to lose a little fat whereas others want to completely change their body shape. If you are one of these many people looking to lose weight then this article is for you. Below I have outlined 8 useful tips that can help you lose weight.

1) RESTRICT YOUR CALORIES:- You may not want to hear this but the bottom line is that you need to consume less calories if you want to lose weight. There are a number of ways you can go about this. The first method is to write down everything that you eat in a normal week and work out the average number of calories you are consuming each day. Then adjust your eating habits so that you are eating less calories each day than your current average. Another method is to write down your target weight in pounds and then multiply this by 12 if you are female and 14 if you are male. This will give you the approximate number of calories you will need to consume to reach and maintain your target weight. A third solution is to use a Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) calculator (that can be found for free on the Internet) which will tell you the number of calories you should be consuming.

2) EAT THE RIGHT FOODS:- Apart from restricting your calories, eating the right foods is an important factor when trying to lose weight. You need to be consuming lots of healthy, nutritous, low calorie foods such as fruit, vegetables and whole grain carbohydrates. Eating smaller portions more regularly throughout the day can also help you lose weight.

3) DRINK MORE WATER:- Drinking water has a number of benefits which can help you lose weight indirectly. First, being properly hydrated keeps your body functioning at its optimal level meaning you can burn fat more efficiently. Second, it reduces water retention and the additional weight that this may bring. Finally, it makes you feel fuller so that you are less likely to eat too much.

4) EXERCISE:- A good diet is half of the challenge when losing weight but you also need to exercise. Start with trying to do 15 minutes a day of walking, cycling, sports or whatever else you fancy. As long as you keep moving each day you will be burning additional calories and losing weight. Remember, the more exercise you do the more weight you will lose.

5) CONSUME POTASSIUM:- Avocados, bananas and apricots are all rich sources of potassium. Potassium can help remove sodium from your body and has been associated with weight loss.

6) CONSUME PROTEIN:- Protein can be found in raw meats, dairy products and even supplements. Research has associated consumption of protein with a temporary fat burning effect and a suppressed appetite, both of which can help you lose weight.

7) SET OUT A PLAN:- Even if you have all the right information, poor planning can mean that you do not take action and ultimately you do not lose weight. Think about how many calories you are going to be consuming each day. Which meals allow you to achieve this? How will you make sure you consume enough water each day? Where are you going to source your daily protein and potassium? When and where are you going to exercise each day? You need to consider all these factors and then create a plan. Write down how you are going to incorporate all the above into your daily routine and then stick with it.

8) STAY POSITIVE:- Sometimes the right information and a plan are still not enough. If you are following a plan half heartedly you are not likely to lose weight. Negative thinking can be your ultimate downfall. Keep thinking positively about your weight loss plans and you will continue to lose weight. Every time you start to feel down think of the weight you have already lost and how good you will look once you have reached your target weight.

How to Handle and Overcome a Weight Loss Plateau

I have a close friend who's been struggling with weight her entire adult life and spent the best part of it on a weight loss and weight gain rollercoaster - she'd lose five pounds and quickly gain seven, she'd lose twelve pounds and then gain sixteen and so on and so forth. She must have tried every diet ever concocted but nothing seemed to help and she remained obese.

Upon reaching her mid-forties she was diagnosed with high cholesterol and blood pressure that went through the roof. The doctor delivered a prognosis that frightened her into immediate action. So she embarked on yet another diet plan which required her to exercise daily, it shrank her portion sizes by at least fifty percent, increased her water intake to twelve eight-ounce glasses per day, doubled her daily fruit and vegetable servings, completely eliminated saturated fats and processed sugars, decreased animal byproducts and tripled her dietary fiber. This diet plan also taught her how to embrace and live by a different philosophy about food, about eating and about exercise and body movement.

This plan which referred to itself as "a lifestyle modifier" rather than a diet plan worked, it really worked. She began shedding fat, losing weight, looking better than ever and feeling wonderful. Until ...

Until the weight stopped coming off. She couldn't imagine what had happened. She religiously followed every directive on the plan and she exercised as instructed. "My waist dropped three inches, my thighs lost a sum total of five inches and each one of my upper arms is now reduced by two inches," she told me the following day. She was noticeably revived but still unsatisfied, "But I still wanted to lose more weight," she said.

"Okay, well let me share with you a couple of ways to move beyond this plateau". I encouraged.

Here are a couple of ways to get out of the weight loss plateau by making a few changes such as:

relaxing, stepping back and give your body and mind a rest for a while;

adding stretching and resistance exercises to your daily exercise routine which will strengthen your bone tissue, increase your lean mass, boost your metabolism and ramp up your fat burning;

"Why haven't you showed me all that years ago?" she questioned.

"I tried many times but you wouldn't listen," I said.

"I guess I wasn't ready," she recognized the truth in my statement. "But look at me now," she pivoted on one heel extending her arms outward. "I'm a size seven now. I'm slim!" she shouted with glee.
